Sumo Wrestling

Sumo wrestling is a traditional Japanese competitive wrestling sport characterized by its unique set of rules and rituals. In sumo, two wrestlers, called “rikishi,” compete in a circular ring known as the “dohyo.” The objective is to force the opponent out of the ring or to make any part of their body, other than the soles of their feet, touch the ground. Sumo is steeped in ancient Shinto traditions, and matches are often preceded by ceremonial rituals, including salt throwing for purification. Wrestlers are categorized into different ranks or divisions, with promotion and demotion based on performance in official tournaments. Sumo wrestling emphasizes strength, technique, and training, and is not only a sport but also a significant cultural practice in Japan, embodying aspects of discipline, honor, and respect.
